Dell 24" UltraSharp 2407WFP Review

Isn’t it always the case that bigger is better? Well in terms of a LCD monitor, this is certainly the case!

I have never really been one to compromise. My first LCD monitor was a 20″ Dell UltraSharp widescreen; I didn’t see the point getting one any smaller. The price for a 20″ didn’t seem to be that much more than a good 19″ monitor, and if it was, just waiting a bit longer until I could afford it was so worth it.

In the process of updating my PC set up two years ago, I could see the possibility for getting an even larger LCD monitor. A monitor with more pixels, better contrast ratio, better looks, and finally one that would surely last a lot longer than my previous one!

The Dell brand I thought was pretty good. Their prices seem sort of resonable, the build quality is pretty good, and their impecable returns policy on ‘dead pixels’ is to die for (4yrs next day replacement). Therefore in the midst of one of those very luring Dell promotions, I decided to upgrade my old monitor for a 24″ widescreen improvement.

Dell 24? Ultra Sharp Horizontal

Wow! The improvement was amazing to put it mildly. The sheer size of this screen at first was shocking. My desk which was once quite taken over with by the 20″ screen was now pretty much entirely covered by this thing, but this was a compromise I was willing to take! The picture quality improvement, the definition, the styling, and connectivity were all really impressive, and miles better than the 20″ screen I had previously.

Full HD-1080p compatible (monitor is actually 1200p native)!
At the time of purchase, HD wasn’t as big as it is now. The PS3 hadn’t been released in the UK, Blu-ray was just starting to take hold in the Japanese markets, and the only real source of HD content was PC games, and even then, the graphics weren’t as impressive as they have now become. It’s only in the past year or so when HD has really come alive, when I have fully appreciated this screen, and the impact it can have on a game or film experience.Dell 24 Ultra Sharp Vertical

I can have my PS3 plugged into this screen (HDMI to DVI convertor required), and am able to watch 1080p Blu-ray films, or alternatively play PS3 games in HD glory. My computer can suprisingly also plug into this monitor (DVI-D), and play games at full 1920×1200 madness. Of course there are then the limitations to your computer hardware to think about. Playing games at 1920×1200 with the graphics settings on high, and anti-alaising also switched on might be a bit of a push for most systems. Therefore if you’re going to want to take full advantage over this screen for computer gaming purposes, then you probably will most likely need a PC upgrade!

Conclusion
This screen is certainly worth getting if you have the money. It’s already great screen quality has been improved further by an updated model, the 2407WFP-HC, the HC part standing for “high-colour”. I’m intrested to see how this compares.
